GPU Acceleration of the Java Virtual Machine

In this talk we will show a preview of the OpenJDK Sumatra project. Sumatra builds on new Java 8 Lambda and Stream APIs and allows code using these new features to be executed directly on GPU devices. For embarrassingly-parallel workloads this can lead to substantial performance improvement.

About Gray Frost

Gary is a software fellow at AMD and is focused on tools and techniques for offloading compute from Java to GPU devices. His work in this area includes being the inventor, architect and lead developer of the open source Aparapi project as well as the co-sponsor of the OpenJDK Sumatra project, which attempts to bring heterogeneous compute (GPGPU) programming to Java programmers, by allowing the Java JIT to create GPU code for suitable workloads.
